Kuala Lumpur, 6–8 August 2024
Mr. Timothy Ngu and Mdm. Lau Ek Bin from the Sarawak Deaf Community Services Association represented DAWN and MyBIM as participants in the Disability x SRHR Residential Training Programme held in Kuala Lumpur from 6–8 August 2024.
The program was organized by the Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Center for Women (ARROW), based in Southeast Asia, in collaboration with SIUMAN Collective. The training provided valuable exposure and learning opportunities for the younger generation of persons with disabilities, preparing and empowering them to become future leaders, advocates, and professional trainers within the OKU community in Malaysia.
The programme aimed to strengthen the capacity of young people from both movements by focusing on the intersection of gender, disability, sexual and reproductive health, and rights (SRHR). Participants also explored and discussed the multiple forms of marginalization faced by women and young persons with disabilities, while emphasizing the importance of inclusion, equality, and accessibility in building a more supportive and empowering society.
The Sarawak Deaf Community Services Association is grateful for the opportunity to be part of this meaningful training programme and remains committed to supporting the empowerment and leadership development of the Deaf and disability communities in Sarawak and Malaysia.
